HISTORY OF FOWEY ROYAL REGATTA

Fowey is a quiet town on the south coast of Cornwall, but for one week every August it plays host to hundreds of visitors who flock to see Fowey Royal Regatta.

Fowey Royal Regatta is held every August and is one of Britain’s premier sailing events. However, not all the action takes place on the water; there’s plenty to keep landlubbers entertained, from children’s entertainment to the famous Giant Pasty ceremony. Most of these events are free and those that it is necessary to charge for are not prohibitive.

The Regatta has a long & proud history, having attracted visitors including Queen Victoria, Prince Albert & Queen Elizabeth II. The Events during Regatta week are organised, marshalled and funded by the Fowey Royal Regatta Committee, an entirely voluntary organisation whose members give freely of their time and effort. The week costs in the region of £30,000 and this money is collected by sponsorship, selling souvenirs but mainly by street collections – that’s an awful lot of pennies in tins!
